Gorumara National Park History

Gorumara National Park has a rich history that dates back to the early 1890s when it was a reserve forest for timber extraction. However, with the depletion of forests in the area, the reserve forest was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1949 to protect the wildlife species that lived there. The sanctuary was initially created to protect the Indian rhinoceros, which was on the brink of extinction due to excessive hunting. In the 1980s, the park was expanded to include other wildlife species and was recognized as a national park in 1992. The name "Gorumara" is derived from the local word "Goroom," which means "the land of the high hills." The park is situated at the foothills of the Himalayas and is home to many indigenous tribes, including the Munda, Oraon, and Toto. The Park has a significant role in the conservation of endangered species and has been successful in reintroducing the Indian rhinoceros in the area. The park is also home to many other endangered species, including the Asian elephant and the Indian bison. In recent years, the park has become a popular destination for ecotourism, and efforts have been made to promote sustainable tourism practices in the region. The park further highlights its importance in the conservation of the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot. The evolution of Gorumara National Park has channeled employment opportunities to the surrounding rural settlements in the eco-tourism activities, forest department and other modes.
